Home Jewelry Cleaning Tips

Keep your gold and silver jewelry looking sparkling clean. Without ruining it!

Yellow Gold and White Gold Stackable Rings

When you first purchased that gold ring it seemed to shine and sparkle, however lately it seems dull and a little… lackluster. You may be tempted by a sleek looking product at the flea market. More often than not those products contain chemicals that will eat away at your Gold or Silver, slowly deteriorating the integrity of your beloved jewelry.

Luckily, there are some simple ways that you can keep your Gold and Silver jewelry looking beautiful, right in the comfort of your home. (Until you can bring it into Money Man Pawn and Jewelry for a professional cleaning and polishing.) You likely already have everything you need.

What to Avoid

Oftentimes in life the simplest solution proves to be the best solution. This principle applies to cleaning your jewelry at home. Another idiom that fits in here is “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Avoid these products and activities while wearing your Jewelry.

  • Bleach - Bleach breaks down the metal in your gold jewelry. Causing them to become weak and brittle. Soaking 14k gold in regular household bleach for 24 hours can cause irreparable damage.
  • Swimming Pools - For the same reason as bleach. The Chlorines and Acids used to clean swimming pools will deteriorate the metal in your jewelry causing it to become weak, brittle and easily broken.
  • Gardening Or Digging - Growing your own garden can be an absolutely fantastic and fulfilling use of your time, However it can cause some serious damage to your jewelry. Stones can get caught on roots or gloves, prongs can be broken, and without doubt it will cause scratches on the metal and maybe even your stones. Which will require not just a cleaning, but polishing as well, to restore the finish on the jewelry.

In general it is best to take your jewelry off before doing any of these activities or using chlorine based products.

What You Can Use

When you are ready to shine up your jewelry there are a few things you can do at home. Below is a list of items you can usually find around the house that can help you clean up your Gold and Silver jewelry.

  • Polishing Cloth - A polishing cloth is a soft non-abrasive cloth that is treated with a fine polish. These clothes remove dirt and tarnish while bringing the shine back to your jewelry.
  • Soft Bristle Toothbrush - The soft bristles can get into hard to reach places and remove dirt and debris without scratching the surface of your prized pieces.
  • Warm Soapy Water - Together with the Soft Bristle Toothbrush mentioned above, and a small amount of mild soap in a bowl of warm water. Dip the brush into the soapy solution and gently brush off any stuck on gunk.

The options listed above are great ways to maintain the beauty of your jewelry at home, But no matter how well you take care of your gold and silver jewelry (unless you keep it in the jewelry box.) Eventually it will get scratches or other wear and tear damage. If you notice a stone loose or scratches forming, the best thing to do is stop by at Money Man Pawn & Jewelry and have one of our jewelry experts give you a free inspection and cleaning, If necessary our onsite jeweler can polish it on our polishing wheel or even repair your item right here in the store.
